TD Friends of the Environment Foundation competition encourages creative environmental planning TORONTO, Nov. 6 /CNW/ - Energy efficiency, water conservation, and tree planting for city streets are just a few of the many areas students can explore as they develop their submissions for the $100,000 Go Green Challenge, a new competition from the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation designed to encourage creative thinking from Canada's best young minds. With bragging rights and prize money up for grabs, the $100,000 Go Green Challenge is actively soliciting creative, workable plans from Canadian college and university students to promote greener communities and make life more sustainable for the future. How it works: - Each team of three or more students plus one faculty sponsor will submit an essay with a maximum of 4,000 words plus supporting documents. - The essay must include an idea or proposal outlining the changes that could be made in a Canadian community to improve the environmental impact and create healthier, greener and more diverse conditions. - Judges will be looking for original ideas that are viable, but forward-looking and integrate elements of environmentally-based community design, which can include issues such as transportation, energy efficiency, water conservation, ecosystem management, air quality, environmental health or urban forestry. - There are four prizes to be won, each consisting of $25,000. For each winning submission, $12,500 will be awarded to the student team members (to be shared equally) and $12,500 will be given to the team's university or college faculty. "The environment is a top priority for Canadians; as a result our future leaders will play a dramatic role in influencing the environmental agenda for Canada's communities. That's why we're asking students to start thinking about the types of green communities they'd like to see today," said Mike Pedersen, Group Head Corporate Operations, TD Bank Financial Group and TD's environment champion. "This challenge provides a forum for new and fresh thinking on the environment from young people with diverse backgrounds. We're hoping to foster teamwork and creativity, and come up with a few smart ideas along the way." The $100,000 Go Green Challenge is open to all legal residents of Canada who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a Canadian university or college, on a full-time or part-time basis at the time of entry in the competition. Submissions can be emailed to tdaward@td.com. The deadline for submissions is January 25, 2008. Each application will be reviewed by an independent judging panel whose role will be to identify four winning submissions that most accurately meet the challenge and judges criteria. Selection of the four prize-winning entries will be made in Toronto by March 31, 2008.
