Driving a hybrid saves more than the environment

New initiative gives auto insurance breaks to those who own or lease hybrids TORONTO, July 28 /CNW/ - Driving a hybrid vehicle is not only good for the environment, but also good for your pocketbook - thanks to a new initiative from TD Insurance. The company's Green Wheel(TM) program rewards those who own or lease hybrid vehicles by offering a five to ten per cent discount on auto insurance premiums. "At TD Insurance, we're listening to consumers who want environmentally-friendly products - and leading with programs that reward green behaviour," says Jean-Francois Tougas, Vice President, TD Insurance. "With TD's Green Wheel discount, saving the environment and saving money can go hand in hand." In the face of rising fuel prices and environmental concerns, auto manufacturers are struggling to keep up with the growing demand for hybrid vehicles. With new fuel economy standards set to take effect in the US in 2017, the popularity of hybrids will likely continue to surge. Hybrid vehicles offer drivers substantial cost savings on fuel, and now also on insurance. By enhancing the cost/benefit proposition of buying a hybrid, TD hopes to help reduce smog and greenhouse gas emissions in Canada. Nearly 2,500 hybrid vehicle drivers across Canada have already signed up for the Green Wheel program. "The amazing early numbers tell us that we've tapped into a huge shift in consumer attitudes about cars, costs and carbon footprints," says Tougas. "Our research tells us that consumers are buying fewer SUVs, and choosing to invest in more environmentally-friendly, fuel-efficient vehicles. That's why our Green Wheel discount makes so much sense for our customers and our business." As part of this initiative, TD Insurance is donating $5,000 to the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (www.fef.ca) - $5 for each of the first 1,000 free online auto insurance quotes requested for a hybrid vehicle.
